JOIN THE CORTE MADERA WOMEN'S IMPROVEMENT CLUB!
Every Woman in Marin Should Support This!
Can you name the local not-for-profit organization that began its work nearly a hundred years ago, after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake sent hundreds of newly homeless people across the SF Bay looking for a place to stay? Many of them found that relief in Corte Madera's Town Park, where they sent up camp among friendly natives. Our local women got together to provide the basics to these displaced people, and organized as the Corte Madera Women's Improvement Club. They have served this town in various ways for every single one of those nearly 100 years since, including working side by side the Lion's Club to hand build the Corte Madera Recreation Center in the late 1940's.
Even if you don't have a single spare minute to become involved in your community, you owe it to yourself to join this group. Annual dues are just $15. As a member, you'll receive a regular newsletter so that you can at least read up on the club's activities, which now include various services to seniors and a new scholarship program for female high school graduates who demonstrate strong community spirit.
This organization is in the midst of a rebirth. There's some fresh new energy from women like Becky Reed, Helen Lambert, Carol Sowa and Kathy Hartzell, and there are some excellent new opportunities for members, such at the first Tuesday Potluck Lunch, the semi-annual flea markets, and all kinds of other down-home, small-town, aren't-you-glad-you-live here events. Send that $15 check, made payable to the CMWIC, to P.O. Box 486, Corte Madera, CA 94976. And call me if you wonder whether or not you'll be getting your money's worth!
