My 12-year old daughter is apparently the reincarnation of Lucille Ball. Last Saturday, after I finished up Madeline Levine’s book, The Price of Privledge, I decided it was time that she, my youngest daughter, learn how to do laundry. I explained in detail how to operate both machines, and told her she couldn’t go out to see her friend until the load was in the dryer, and a second load was in the wash, and then I went upstairs to do some work on the computer.
So when the washer first comes to a stop, right before the wash water drains, well, my new little laundress figures that must mean the washer was finished. She opens the lid and sees the clothes sitting in a tub full of water, and figures there must be some kind of problem. Anxious to get on with her Saturday, she lifts out the sopping wet clothes and puts them into the dryer. Problem number two: the dryer, of course, refuses to turn on under the weight of all that water. Hmmm, she thinks. Next, looking back into the washer, and seeing it is still filled with water, she decides to empty it. My husband walks in just in time to find her racing across the room with a plastic jug, where she is scooping the water out of the washer and tossing it out the open family room window. There is water everywhere, all over the floor. “What?!” she shouts. “Why are you looking at me like that? It’s not my fault, I’m trying to fix it!”
You would almost expect Ed and Ethel to walk in any moment.
One of the members of the Women’s Club, Jan Strittmatter, told us about a young woman she knows of who is serving in the U.S. military forces in Afghanistan and is trying to provide supplies for Afghan children in an orphanage and a hospital near her base at Camp Phoenix. At our last meeting, Club members decided to make these very poor children in Afghanistan the focus of our Club’s Holiday Project. We will be collecting supplies for them during the next few weeks (see suggestions below) and then will send them to her in Afghanistan through the APO (military mail).
If you can contribute children’s warm clothing, school supplies, games, toys, kits, or other things that would help make these children’s lives a little better, please either bring them to a Club meeting or give me a call at 924-4253 to arrange a pickup. Thank you for whatever you can do.

Hi Jana and the rest of the Corte Madera Women's group: Thank you so much for contacting me. I know that I have heard from you before but please remind me of how you heard about me. I'm apologize for not remembering, I have been in contact with so many people across the country that it gets a little confusing sometimes. I am keeping track of everyone I am in contact with though so I promise to keep it on file after this. I am actually not at my base right now or I would be able to look it up. Right now I am at Bagram Airforce Base getting ready to go on a short pass, which I am very excited about. As far as the orphanges, schools and hospitals that I have been collecting things for, I will forward you a list of supplies that are needed. In addition, winter clothing, shoes, coats, and socks I'm sure are going to be great demand here shortly. It is starting to turn into Winter here very quickly. Over 300 children died last year just due to the weather conditions. I just found this out recently from one of my commanders. As far as toys, they love soccer balls, kits, etc. really anything that our children would enjoy playing with back home they would love. They really don't have much to speak of so when they are given a simple writing pen, they are thrilled. The poverty here is truly shocking. If only everyone could get the chance to see what we take for granted on a daily basis. It really puts things into perspective. I will give my current address which will work for now but I am going to be moving to a different part of Afghanistan. Anything that gets delivered after I leave will be forwarded though, rest assured. I will send you my new address as quickly as I can, I don't have it yet. I will be moving downrange to a place called Mazar-I-Sharif, which is in Northwest Afghanistan. I will also be very involved with the Humanitarian missions going on there in the local villages, schools and hospitals, so supplies that are sent to me will go to good use. I will make sure of it.
