Civic Duty Calls:
Oktoberfest this Saturday.

Be there.

Itfs that time of year again.  Surely it is the simple civic duty of all men and women, over age 21, to stop by the Old Square, pay their $13, (or $16 with a free commemorative mug) and raise their glasses to the volunteer civic organization which has been working selflessly, and very effectively, on your behalf, for nearly 15 years.

Please do not take this responsibility lightly.  If you have ever, even once, passed by Corte Maderafs beautiful hanging flower baskets and felt a sense of gratitude, this is your chance to settle that obligation; your opportunity to be part of the one annual event which makes possible all of that beauty, and all of those happy little feelings of gratitude.

This coming Saturday, from 12:30 until 4:30, is Corte Maderafs 13th annual Oktoberfest
in the Old Square, sponsored by the Corte Madera Beautification Committee.  Here are the top ten reasons you simply must show up:

10. Civic involvement is next to Godliness. You will feel good doing something to support your community. If you only show up to one community event a year, this one is it!
9. Your presence will show support to all the volunteers and employees who work so hard to make your town more beautiful.  They deserve it!
8. Your return on investment from supporting this group is beyond compare:  In terms of how the work of  this group has  increased your property values, homeowners could probably pay the admission fee more than ten thousand times and still not be even.
7.  The beer, wine and sparkling waters will be plentiful and delicious.  Marin Brewing Company, Lagunitas Brewing, Sierra Nevada, Pilsner Urquell, the Zorns, and several others donate their product every year to help raise money.  (Be sure to thank them!)
6.  The lunch will be delicious and cheap!  The Redwood High school Girlfs Water Polo Team will once again cook up a delicious German style lunch featuring Adelefs sausages and potato salad for $5.  Youfll also be supporting them.
5.  The ice cream is donated by Lapperts.  Root beer floats are one of the main attractions for the kiddies, as is the very fun crafts table and the face painting, sponsored by the Corte Madera Inn and the amazing Julie Kritzberger at the Chamber of Commerce.
4.  You will see many old friends and neighbors, most of them people you like!
3.  The Corte Madera Town Band and the Jim Ragle Band will make you feel like you are in Mayberry, circa 1960.  You can forget for a couple of hours at least, about what our world has really become, and pretend that we live in a much kinder, gentler world.
 2.  Itfs a real bargain. The price was supposed to be $15 or $18 with a mug, but
the posters got printed with the wrong price, so you get even luckier.
1. You will have a wonderful time. I promise. Donft miss it.

In short: great beer, good food, excellent Karma. Even if you can only stop by for a few minutes, do drop by and pay up, so that this excellent civic organization can continue to do its work for you, and for your property values.  I mean it.  Ifm taking names.  If you canft come, send me a check for $13 made out to the Corte Madera Beautification Committee.  I know youfre busy and the kids have their soccer games and so forth, but you simply must raise a glass of cold fresh beer, wine or sparkling water this Saturday to this most worthy cause.

Inspirational Odds and Ends

A friend of mine who is a local therapist recently told me that there seems to be an epidemic of need for therapeutic services these days, and that many of his peers are so busy they simply canft accept any more patients.

So, in an effort to do my share to uplift and inspire, here are a few interpretations of various wise thoughts Ifve heard recentlyc (Many of them are from real estate guru Brian Buffini at his recent turning point retreat.)

œ There is a shortage of love and appreciation in this world. If you send it out in slices, it will come back in loaves.

œ We all want to plant a seed, water and fertilizer it, then pull it up in three days to see how it is doing. Give me patience, quick!

œ Your ability to rest and recover from your efforts is directly proportional to your ability to win in the long run.  Take time to rest.

œ Most of us have two serious blind spots.  We are blind to our shortcomings, and also to our giftedness.

œ Bad habits are like diapers.  They do not change themselves.

œ A simple truth about self esteem is that you donft realize that it is low, until it starts to grow.

œ Humility comes from the word ghumosh (for soil), and is indeed the soil from which all human growth takes place.

And finally, one of my favorites:

œ You wouldnft worry so much about what people thought of you if you knew how seldom they did.

But do know that we will be thinking of you Saturday, in hopes that you will show up and be counted as someone who knows the value of taking time to stop and smell the hanging baskets!

Devotedly yours,

Neighbor Pat
