GREENBRAE

Greenbrae, site of an old dairy ranch, has its modern roots in the family of Niels Schultz Sr., a pioneer Marin developer who liked the sound of “brae,” Scottish for hillside. The family bought the 700-acre Greenbrae Ranch near Larkspur in 1946. To this day, the family owns a great deal of real estate throughout Greenbrae, including a number of apartment buildings on Spyglass Hill.

What To See

Mt. Tamalpais and Muir Woods are easily accessed from Highway 101, and Greenbrae has one main park and several nearby hiking and biking trails. Aside from the shops and businesses at Bon Air Market, there’s also shopping and dining opportunities at nearby Larkspur Landing. Greenbrae is also home of Marin General Hospital, the county’s largest medical facility. The College of Marin is in Kentfield.

Weather

Average temperature is 59 degrees, with an average maximum temperature of 70 degrees and an average low of 48. From July to September, highs get into the 80s. Greenbrae doesn’t get too much fog, and since it is inland it tends to be warmer in the summer than other communities closer to the Pacific coast.

Housing

Some say this area looks more like southern California. Expanded ranch style homes on nicely landscaped lots in subdivision like settings. Some spectacular views from up high, but some highway noise can accompany. Many condominium, apartments and senior housing facilities overlook the water on the creek side. Some of the apartments along South Eliseo are especially choice, as they are on one level and have beautiful views of Corte Madera Creek and Mt. Tam.

Schools

The Kentfield School District is widely regarded as one of Marin’s best. The parent community is very supportive of the schools, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars each year. Major renovations have recently taken place on both the Bacich (elementary) and Kent (middle school) campuses. Most graduates of this district attend Redwood High School in Larkspur. The highly regarded Marin Catholic High School, which regularly dominates the Marin Athletic League in many sports, is located in this area.
